A few months ago I came across a new eye cream which now became a best seller in the shop. Before I read the description, I went straight to the INCI. That's what I do! Because the ingredients list tells me more than any marketing claim would do. About halfway down the list I saw it: Superoxide Dismutase. I've been looking for a product with SOD in it for a long time. Finding it in an eye cream, alongside peptides and hyaluronic acid, was a genuine moment of excitement.
But let me explain why.
What SOD actually is and what it does in the skin
Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme. Not a vitamin, not a plant extract, but an enzyme that already exists in the human body. Its job is to neutralise superoxide radicals, which are among the most reactive and damaging free radicals produced by the body as a byproduct of normal cell metabolism.
Here's the thing: the skin produces its own SOD naturally, but this capacity declines with age, sun exposure, pollution, and chronic stress. The result is an accumulation of oxidative damage — collagen and elastin break down faster, inflammation becomes harder to control, and the skin loses its ability to repair itself efficiently.
Why SOD stands out among antioxidants
Vitamin C and vitamin E are well known, well studied, and genuinely useful. But they work differently. They neutralise free radicals directly, by donating electrons. SOD operates upstream of that process. It converts superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide, which is then broken down by other enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase) into water and oxygen. Simply put, SOD intercepts the damage before it has a chance to cascade.
There is a second difference worth knowing. As an enzyme, SOD works catalytically. It processes one superoxide radical after another without being used up, whereas vitamin C is spent with each radical it neutralises.
You rarely see SOD listed in formulas compared to vitamin C or niacinamide. Partly because it's more complex and costly to stabilise, and partly because it doesn't translate into a simple marketing headline.
What SOD does for the skin in practice:
- Anti-aging. By protecting collagen and elastin from oxidative breakdown, SOD slows the structural deterioration of the skin. Not by stimulating production, but by protecting what's already there.
- Anti-inflammatory. Superoxide radicals are directly involved in inflammatory signalling. Neutralising them calms reactive skin — relevant for acne-prone, rosacea-prone, or generally sensitised skin.
- Repair support. SOD accelerates the recovery of damaged skin — sunburn, environmental stress, post-procedure sensitivity.
- Environmental protection. Blue light, pollution, cigarette smoke — all trigger oxidative stress. SOD addresses the damage at the source.
Why the eye area needs antioxidant support specifically
The skin around the eyes is not the same as on the rest of the face. In my experience with customers, the eye contour tends to be thinner, more reactive, and the first to show signs of aging. It has fewer sebaceous glands, less structural support, and is in near-constant movement from blinking and expression.
This combination makes the eye area both more vulnerable to oxidative damage and less tolerant of aggressive formulations. An antioxidant enzyme that works without irritating, without requiring a specific pH window to be active, and without the photosensitivity concerns of some vitamin C forms is, for this area in particular, a well-considered ingredient choice.
Where I found it: Rapid Eye Treatment
The eye cream I found SOD in is the Rapid Eye Treatment by Twelve Beauty. The formula combines Superoxide Dismutase with natural plant peptides for a lifting and draining effect, sodium hyaluronate for hydration, panthenol (vitamin B5) for barrier repair, and jojoba oil.
The formulator and the founder of Twelve Beauty brand notes that the peptides work better in lower lipid concentrations, which explains the unusually light texture of the cream. That is not a marketing decision but a formulation constraint, and in this case it works in the product's favour for warmer months.
Customers who've tried it report smoother skin around the eyes, long-lasting hydration, and a more rested appearance without any heaviness.
What to take from this
SOD is not a new discovery in dermatology, but it remains underrepresented in skincare formulas. If you're building antioxidant support into your routine, particularly for the eye area or for reactive and aging-prone skin, it's worth knowing what it does and looking for it in the INCI.
Two practical points. First, SOD works alongside other antioxidants rather than replacing them, so there's no need to choose between it and your vitamin C. Second, as with any antioxidant, it protects rather than corrects, which means consistency matters more than concentration.
